Do something special today: make someone else's day!

Generosity

The reason that you are looking at this website is
because you have received a favour anonymously from
an individual and they have left a card. They in turn will
have received a favour from someone else. It can be
something very simple, for example paying for a cup of
tea for somebody; or paying for the next squash court
hire. What you decide to do should not be related to the
favour that you received, it should be anonymous and
something that you personally feel good about.

Make it fun. Giving makes you feel good. Try it!

Pay It Forward is a 2000 American film based on the
novel of the same name by Catherine Ryan Hyde. It stars
Haley Joel Osment as a boy who launches a charitable
program based on the networking of good deeds. He
calls his plan "Pay it forward", which means the recipient
of a favour does a favour for a third party rather than
paying the favour back. He does a favour for three
people, asking each of them to "pay the favour forward" by
doing favours for three other people, and so on, along a
branching tree of good deeds.

This idea is not a new one by any means. Benjamin
Franklin, for example, gave a good example on April 22nd
1784 to his friend Benjamin Webb when he wrote:

"Dear Sir, I received yours of the 15th Instant, and the
Memorial it enclosed. The account they give of your
situation grieves me. I send you herewith a Bill for Ten
Louis d'ors. I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only
lend it to you. When you shall return to your Country with
a good Character, you cannot fail of getting into some
Business, that will in time enable you to pay all your
Debts. In that Case, when you meet with another honest
Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this
Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like
operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with
another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro' many
hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop
its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of
good with a little money. I am not rich enough to afford
much in good works, and so am obliged to be cunning
and make the most of a little. With best wishes for the
success of your Memorial, and your future prosperity, I
am, dear Sir, your most obedient servant, B. Franklin."
